Introduction

More about Ruth Fabby

MBE, DL, CF, FRSA, MA

In December 2022 I started to work freelance after salaried positions in Disability arts for nearly 30 years, namely with Disability Arts Cymru [Wales], DaDaFest [Liverpool]  and Full Circle Arts [Manchester], offering bespoke arts and creative industries development services  & training.

I have also been concentrating on my first love - writing poems, monologues and plays, with the occasional short story and live arts performance  thrown in.

I have a great deal to say and determined to make this next chapter a legacy of my producing, observations, imaginings and creativity, specifically about the lived experiences of women past and present.

My life to date has taken unusual and interesting turns, earliest musings shaped by my love for God and spiritual aspects of our shared humanity.

Being identified as deaf at the age of 6, meant I felt like an outsider as never really understood what was going on around me. My first books led me to escape into the world of amazing females role models such as Mary Jones [and her Bible], Joan of Arc, Gladys Aylward [The Inn of the Sixth Happiness ] and I loved reading about the characters in the scriptures leading to the creation of my own monologues and performances within church settings.

This drive led me to train further in creative ministry, where I also became lead tutor for performance arts  with what is now called, 3C  Creative Arts in Sydney, Australia from 1988 to 1991.

More background and insights

I have had an extensive career in the arts, particularly in disability and deaf arts, and have worked as Director of Disability Arts Cymru and Artistic Director and CEO of DaDaFest.

In January 2023, I was named one of 100 Change Makers in Wales for my work with Disability Arts Cymru. Futuregenerations

I am currently focusing on my own creative work, such as writing, playwriting, and performing. I am a public speaker based on disability equality and the arts, and also works within faith communities to explore the spiritual nature of our lives and how God speaks to us in today's world.

Additionally, I offer consultancy services that support disabled and D/deaf artists to create inclusive and accessible arts experiences.

I initially trained in performance arts, speech and drama at Liverpool Theatre School, intending to focus on dance, I soon had opportunities and support to develop as a performer and physical theatre practitioner, and have worked in the arts / disability arts since.

As a stimulating and enthusiastic public speaker, I have regularly invited to speak about subjects relating to Disability and Deaf arts at conferences and cultural events across the globe. In the last few years I have worked in Finland, Qatar, Toronto, New Delhi, Pittsburgh [PA], Raleigh [NC], San Francisco, delivered zooms at conferences in Singapore Germany, Hong Kong, RoI and USA, as well as working across the UK delivering talks, chairing or leading workshops.

I became a Winston Churchill Travel Fellow [CF] 2014, visiting India, Malawi & South Africa exploring how the arts were being shaped by the lived experience of disability.  I have also been invited to DR Congo, Australia and various parts of Europe to create and encourage connections with disability organisations around the world.

In April 2014 I was appointed a Deputy Lieutenant for Merseyside, was made an honorary Canon at Liverpool Cathedral in Oct 2016 until 2022 and awarded a MBE in the 2016 Queens Birthday Honours for services to disability & Deaf arts.

In November 2019 I was awarded the Inspiration Award at the inaugural Culture and Creativity Awards for the Liverpool City Region.

I view disability rights very much as human rights and articulates the links between art and social change

Access information:

I have a deafness gain and communicate by email and texts, rather than down a telephone line. In public meetings I prefer to use a Lipspeaker with sign supported English [ SSE], or live captioning in meetings or remotely.  I am an extremely good lip reader, but this is quite tiring and I prefer to do this in meetings with two or three, using my own portable bluetooth microphone.
